Specialization in Investment Management

The specialization in Investment Management prepares you for a broad set of careers in the finance industry, including portfolio management, security analysis, asset allocation, quantitative investment methods, and securities sales and trading. Investment management skills are also important for regulators and policy makers in the area of financial markets.

The global asset management industry overseas trillions of dollars across asset classes (equities, fixed income, commodities), institutional settings (hedge funds, ETFs, mutual funds, pension funds, insurance companies), geographical locations and management philosophies. The industry invests on behalf of households, endowments, firms and governments, aiming to provide favourable risk-adjusted returns, provide crucial diversification, and allocate risks efficiently. The investment management industry also ensures that the economy’s capital is deployed in productive uses, matching funds to investment opportunities.

The specialization in Investment Management aims to prepare participants for careers in this industry and related fields. It provides a solid analytical foundation for understanding risk and return, value creation, and regulatory and legal institutions in asset markets. It is built on academic rigor, including recent technical advances, to build a deep understanding of key issues in managing assets. The program provides a hands-on toolkit to enable students apply these insights and be fully effective in challenging and interesting roles immediately on graduation.

The program is designed for students with a Bachelor’s degree and some prior academic experience of finance topics, but accommodates a wide range of backgrounds. Pedagogical methods, including case-based teaching and extensive interactions with practitioners and corporate partners, are designed to prepare all our students for their desired career trajectories, and benefit from the range of nationalities and backgrounds of our students.

Leading finance department

The Department of Finance at SSE is a leading finance department with about 20 faculty and over 20 PhD students. The department’s research covers the whole range of financial economics, including corporate finance and contract theory, law and finance, corporate governance, asset pricing and financial econometrics, derivatives and risk management, mathematical finance, behavioral finance, market microstructure and real estate finance. The experienced and multi-national group of faculty bring their full expertise into the program courses.
