Dan Wolgers: I am a rebel

2024

rebel.jpeg

I am a rebel is an orange hand-knotted rug designed by the Swedish contemporary artist Dan Wolgers. In the motif, Wolgers draws inspiration from children's humorous, often drastic answers on school tests — found on the Internet. You can find the rug at The House of Innovation, Norrtullsgatan 2, on the top floor next to the study places.

Dan Wolgers, born 1955 in Stockholm, is a Swedish artist and professor known for his conceptual and often humorous art. His work challenges traditional notions of art and the role of the artist through the use of irony, absurdity, and playfulness. Wolgers gained particular attention during the 1990s with several controversial projects. One example is when, as part of an exhibition at Liljevalchs konsthall, he sold the chairs from the exhibition room, sparking debate about art and commercialism. He frequently works with concepts where the artwork is not necessarily a physical object, but an idea or an action that challenges the viewer's way of thinking. Wolgers is also highly regarded as a lecturer and thinker within the art world, and has served as a professor at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm.

The rug was made for ASPLUND/Åman Art Rug Collection, 2024. Limited edition of 10 pieces per size. The rug is signed and numbered. Dimensions: 140 x 225 cm / 200 x 320 cm. Material: 100% wool, hand-knotted with approx. 120,000 knots/m² and contains approx. 10 kg of yarn per square metre.
