Stockholm Seminar on Japan, March 26

“Japan is back - Implications of the Takaichi Economic Policy” with Naoyuki Yoshino, Keio University

Speaker: Naoyuki Yoshino
Professor Emeritus of Economics, Keio University
Former Dean & CEO, Asian Development Bank Institute
Chief Advisor, Financial Research Center, Financial Services Agency, Government of Japan

Japan under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is charting a bold economic course aimed at revitalizing growth in a shifting global landscape. Central to her agenda is an economic strategy that blends proactive fiscal support, investment in strategic sectors like AI, semiconductors, and resource security, and reforms to support labor markets and corporate dynamism. High on the agenda is navigating the green economy transition -restructuring Japan’s energy and industrial systems toward decarbonization, clean tech and resilience, while balancing economic priorities and sustainability imperatives in a context of global competition and supply chain fragility. This economic recalibration comes amid intensifying geoeconomic and geopolitical pressures, to broaden global realignments in trade and security. Japan aims to bolster supply-chain resilience and reduce strategic dependencies as part of this wider strategy.

In this environment, deepening economic and political ties with the European Union is increasingly important. The EU and Japan share a commitment to competing in clean technologies, enhancing sustainability standards, and strengthening regulatory cooperation - partnerships that support both green transitions and a rules-based international order.

Professor Yoshino will in his talk present and reflect on the main economic aspects of the Takaichi administration and its implications for the future of Japan.
