Application Information
Individuals with the following qualifications are eligible to apply for the SSE Doctoral Program in Business Administration.
- A completed Masters degree (MSc, MA, MIM, MGM or MBA) or its equivalent, including at least one and a half years of full time study of business administration.
- A working knowledge of English.
- A GRE or GMAT with an average score of over 650, taken within the past five years (this requirement is waived for applicants with a degree from, or currently enrolled at, SSE).
The SSE Doctoral Program in Business Administration is designed for candidates with proven academic capabilities, motivation, and the potential for advanced analytical research. Previous academic work, standardized graduate examination performance (GMAT or GRE), and the personal assessment of instructors and professional supervisors are taken into consideration in assessing each applicant’s qualifications. Students are admitted to one of the following three concentrations:
• Accounting and Managerial Finance (head of admissions board: Professor Johnny Lind)
• Management (head of admissions board: Professor Pär Åhlström)
• Marketing, Strategy and International Business (head of admissions board: Professor Richard Wahlund)
SSE provides a tax-exempt scholarship of SEK13,000 per month to all doctoral students in Business Administration who commence the program, but candidates are encouraged to secure financing from an outside source.
Applying to the Program
Admission takes place once a year, with an application deadline on February 1 for enrollment in September the same year.
The next deadline for application to the SSE PhD Program in Business Administration is February 1, 2012. Applications must be sent by postal or courier services to the mailing address given on the right of the page, and must be received before the deadline to be considered (NB: e-mailed or faxed applications are not accepted).
A complete application contains the following items:
- A completed and signed application form (downloadable
here in Adobe Acrobat format).
- A curriculum vitae.
- A certified copy of certificates and transcripts from university/college (with English translations, if in a non-European language).
- A statement of purpose - a concise statement concerning your plans for PhD studies and your career objectives. The statement should be written in English and should not exceed 1000 words.
- A copy of your Master thesis in Business Administration or a comparable academic thesis; if your Masters degree had no thesis requirement, we need a copy of any academic output or journal articles you may have written.
- Two (2) letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the school, or in an envelope sealed and signed by the referee to be included in the application package (the template is downloadable
here in Adobe Acrobat format).
For applicants who have not received their Masters degree from SSE, or who are not currently enrolled at SSE, we also need:
- A description of how exams are graded at your university/college.
- A copy of the official test result of either the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test) result, with an average of 650. The GRE Center Code for SSE PhD Program is 7016. The GMAT Center Code for SSE PhD Program in Business Administration is MFV-98-51. The test must have been taken within the past five years.
- For non-native speakers of English, a copy of the official test results for TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) or IELTS (International English Language Testing System), is helpful to us (but is not obligatory).
