New rules on tuition fees at higher education institutions

The Swedish parliament recently introduced registration and tuition fees for third-country students from outside the European Economic Area or Switzerland attending public higher education institutions in Sweden, starting in the 2011 fall semester. The new fee structure aims to ensure full cost coverage for third-country students (as a group rather than on an individual basis).

Tuition fees at Stockholm School of Economics

The Stockholm School of Economics (SSE) has decided to implement the new rules for public higher education institutions and will introduce tuition fees for third-country students as of fall 2011. SSE will apply the same conditions and qualification requirements as public higher education institutions.

SSE has set an annual tuition fee of SEK 100,000 for bachelor’s programs and SEK 150,000 for master’s programs.

SSE will be offering a limited number of tuition scholarships for succesfully admitted students to the MSc programs. More information about these scholarships will be published shortly on the website. The Swedish Institute www.si.se (SI) offers a restricted number of scholarships for master studies (very few). If, as a master student, you wish to be part of the SI scholarship program, you must send with your application documents addressed to the admissions office, half a page indicating name, address, date of birth, gender, citizenship, the study program you wish to apply to, and a short description of why you wish to be part of the SI scholarship program.

Students pay for housing, literature, and other living expenses themselves. These costs are estimated to be about SEK 7800 a month (or about EUR 690). Students from outside the EU/EEA area must obtain a student residence permit, in which they can show that they can pay for their living expenses in Sweden during their studies.
