European Institute of Japanese Studies
The mission of the European Institute of Japanese Studies is to serve as a major center for research on the economies and societies of Japan and East Asia, with a particular emphasis on issues that impact Europe.
“Our mission is to create opportunities for mutual learning between Japan and Europe.”
The European Institute of Japanese Studies was established in Stockholm in September 1992 through an endowment from Swedish and Japanese businesses and the Swedish government. It operates as an autonomous research center within the Stockholm School of Economics, independent of economic and political interest groups.
Research and education at the core
The institute’s five areas of activity are research, education, information, public seminars, and corporate relations. With research and education at its core, the institute also provides information services, organizes conferences, workshops, and seminars, disseminates research results, and participates in public policy debate.
Strengthening links
The Euro-Japanese relationship is often described as a weak link in the world economy. A major goal of the institute is to strengthen this relationship and to provide opportunities for Europe and Japan to learn more about and from each other.
The institute acts as a platform for research and educational programs, focusing on the dynamics of Japan and East Asia, as well as the links between East Asia and Europe. It contributes to the integration of the global economy by interpreting, analyzing, and disseminating information to decision-makers and opinion leaders in both the public and private sectors.
To facilitate this East–West dialogue, the institute opened a liaison office in Tokyo in October 1997. The activities of the Tokyo office have been supported by the Embassy of Sweden, the Swedish Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (SCCJ), and European and Japanese corporations.
