Welcome to the Department of Economics

The Department of Economics at the SSE has around 15 full-time faculty and 35 PhD students.
Magnus Johannesson, head of Department of EconomicsOur faculty teach courses in the Bachelor and Master programs at the SSE and the Department is responsible for the economics specialization. Faculty also teach PhD courses and play a major role in the Stockholm Doctoral Program in Economics, Econometrics and Finance. According to the Financial Times ranking of Master programs (10-5-2009), the SSE is 3rd in Europe when it comes to economics.

Important research areas at the Department include behavioral economics, economic geography, economic growth, economic policy, game theory, industrial organization, international trade, health economics, macroeconomics and microeconomic theory. Faculty publish regularly in top economic journals (see Faculty Publications) and teach courses in their areas of expertise.

The Department of Economics has a distinguished history. Its first professor was Eli Heckscher (1909-1944). His student Bertil Ohlin was also a professor here (1929-1965) and was awarded the 1977 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics for developing the Heckscher-Ohlin model of international trade.
