At the Center for Management and Organization, research is characterized by an ambition to critically and constructively study, describe and analyze the emergence and development of managing and organizing activities in society, foremost from a stakeholder, board or top executive perspective.
Governance and management themes are prominent in most studies, but often a more specific topical dimension is added, currently e.g. organized in four research programs; "Corporate governance", "Managerial leadership", "Art & media management", and "Non-profit organizing".
Theoretically, research is founded on both economic and sociological theories, which includes both institutionally flavoured (macro-) as well as action focusing (micro-) approaches. It also leaves room for a combination processual and structural perspectives.
Empirically, the studies involve different kinds of large (foremost Scandinavian) organizations, such as global firms, holding companies, federative organizations, cooperatives, non-profit/voluntary and family/clan organizations. Multimethod approaches are encouraged with a special predilection for participant observation techniques.
The Center has two main ambitions. Firstly, it aims to uphold a recognized presence in the ongoing scientific discourses in selected areas of governance and management theory. Secondly, it strives to be involved in empirical studies which are of significant interest and value to the actors and organizations involved, as well as to society as a whole.
